Success Story

About a year ago, I edited a book for a man named Frank DeSario. Frank is a retired Boston Police officer with an interesting story to tell about his work in Boston during some of the most famous and infamous times in that city’s history. After the editing, Frank wanted to self-publish his book. Together we put the text into shape with a magnificent cover designed by a talented graphic designer from Chicago, several photos and an appropriate blurb for the back cover.

For those of you not familiar with self-publishing, it is a method of publishing where the author submits the book’s text with photos and cover design to the self-publishing company. The company sends a “proof” to the author for approval. Then, the author can apply to that company for an ISBN number and the book information becomes available to bookstores or buyers all over the world on a print-on-demand basis. Print-on-demand is a process where the company only prints the copies of the book that are ordered, when they are ordered.

Frank’s book, “Badge #1 Memoirs of a Boston Cop” has sold well and has been bringing him royalties since its publication. Many of his friends and police buddies have bought the book as well as other people who have seen it online or heard about it. There is also a page on my website outlining this book and our efforts in getting it published. http://www.shellyrosenberg.com/Frank_DeSario.htm

In the middle of February 2007, I was contacted by the History Press. Their director had come across the information about Frank’s book on my website and wanted to contact Frank. They were interested in publishing his book. Frank DeSario and History Press www.historypress.net have agreed to work together and History Press will be publishing a new edition of this book. It should be available within the next two months.

This has been exciting for Frank and for me. I am delighted that what started out as a story of Frank’s experiences that he wanted to write for “friends and family,” has been self-published and bought by many people and now will be published by an established and respected publisher and marketed on a full scale basis.

I hope this success story inspires some of you to keep working on those manuscripts and to continue to believe in yourselves. This same success could be yours.
